The 4 Question Families and How to Use Them

Each family shows its purpose and can be expanded to see how to guide the AI more precisely. Standard and variable multiple-choice questions belong to the same family.

Multiple choice (standard or variable)Answer choices with automatic grading.

Quick description: best for checking concepts, key facts, definitions, and quick distinctions. The variable variant adapts the values in selected calculation questions.

Tell the AI: ask for 2 to 5 answer choices, 5 choices when you want more variety, or multiple correct answers when the question requires it.

Example: “Make MCQs with 5 choices, sometimes with 2 correct answers, and clearly list every accepted answer.”

Fill in the blanksA concise answer inserted into a sentence or brief context.

Quick description: useful for vocabulary, formulas, dates, precise concepts, and key terms.

Tell the AI: ask for 1 or 2 blanks per question, one-word answers when possible, and accepted variants or synonyms.

Example: “Use simple blanks and accept relevant scientific synonyms in the answer key.”

Short written responseA short or medium written response with assisted grading.

Quick description: suited for reasoning, explanation, justification, and synthesis.

Tell the AI: provide the expected length, required concepts, grading criteria, and desired level of detail.

Example: “Ask for a 5 to 7 sentence answer with 3 criteria: accuracy, justification, and vocabulary.”

Extended responseA developed response graded with a holistic rubric.

Quick description: ideal for a position, analysis, connection between concepts, or supported personal reflection.

Tell the AI: ask for up to 3 prompt choices, the expected tone, evidence to cite, and rubric criteria.

Example: “Offer 3 reflection prompts and ask students to choose one with two supported arguments.”

This option creates or attaches resources students must use in their answers. Scolaro asks clarification questions first, then prepares the texts and images before generating the related questions.

Text sources

Articles, excerpts, documents found on the web, or generated texts around the topic. You can set a source count, approximate word range, themes to cover, and which question types may use them.

Image sources

Images, charts, maps, or visual documents. Add the images, review the thumbnails, then add a title, source, date, and context when possible to guide analysis.

How to add them: in the Custom assessment generator, enable Add resources, choose text and/or image resources, answer the clarification questions, keep the page open while preparation runs, then review the resources before building the assessment. Availability of new features is managed by Scolaro and may vary by account or school.
